the need
When PSL began in 2006 the NEED was simple, increase the opportunities for high-school aged youth in Providence to play baseball. The opportunities in Providence were disappearing rapidly and the few that existed were struggling to survive. PSL met that need.
Over the years, and particularly since the COVID pandemic, the NEED has become greater then simply providing an opportunity to play baseball.
Prior to the onset of the COVID pandemic, two thirds of high-school coaches were concerned with the mental health of their student-athletes (Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology, Sept 2019, Vol. 13 Issue 3, p390-404). With that being said, since COVID, attendance rates in schools have drop and the importance of after-school programs, particularly athletic programs, has become even more crucial in reengaging with youth, as the research has proven year after year and as far back as 1968, high-school student-athletes are more likely to attend school, have better than average GPA, and go on to college, and those numbers are even better among BIPOC students-athletes.
With all of this at the forefront, PSL engaged with our student-athletes and their families, community members and leaders, and community-based organizations to understand were PSL can have the greatest impact for students. Having gather this information, PSL is expending its opportunities to include more robust mentoring and leadership development programs, a one stop college access support program, employment services, academic support, community service opportunities, access to mental health services and when the means are available assisting with everyday basic needs of our student-athletes and their families.
PSL sees its role in addressing our student-athletes needs by proving more access and opportunities to be engaged in learning and partnering with other community-based organizations and local resources. PSL intends to deliver these services and programs while continuing to provide a high quality sports experience we are known for.
