What is Providence Sports & Leadership?
Ten years ago, two men came together with a plan—using baseball, they would engage Providence youth in leadership, academic support, and athletics. Inspired by similar programs in New York City, Bill Flaherty and Kennedy Arias founded Providence Sports and Leadership.
Today, Providence Sports and Leadership (PSL) provides over 80 young men between the ages of 13 and 18 with the opportunity to play competitive baseball at an extremely reduced price. PSL has three travel teams: 14 and under (14u), 16 and under (16u), and 18 and under (18u). Our 16u and 18u teams are prospect teams, playing highly competitive schedules that expose them to collegiate scouts throughout New England.
In addition to organizing competitive teams, PSL exposes our players to year-round training, athletic, ethical and academic, for teens of all skill levels. Outside of our competitive spring/summer season, we offer fall baseball and indoor winter training at the Elmwood Community Center. Players are required to participate in community service events overseen by their coaches. To support our players’ academic endeavors, we have a mentorship program called College Assist, funded by a grant from the City of Providence, that guides students through high school level work and college applications. Over the last 6 years, 30 of our players have gone to college, and 15 PSL alumni are currently playing college baseball.
Down the road, we look forward to expanding our impact in a multitude of ways. In light of the success of the College Assist program, we have plans to implement summer academic support and weekly study tables for students of all ages. Kennedy Arias remains committed to finding new community service opportunities for our players. Eventually, we hope to operate out of our own facility instead of working out of the Elmwood Community Center and expand operations to include softball to reach out to the young women of Providence.
While baseball is at the heart of our mission, PSL is focused on developing outstanding student-athletes. We have been blessed to be exposed to exceptional students, athletes, and young men and to assist them as they grow into exceptional adults.
